MITES Acari

The mite collection is based on the long-standing work of Charles Walter and Carl Bader (water mites) and Josef Schweizer (terrestrial mites). In addition to these, the following collections are also held: Baumann, Cerny, Schwoerbel, Sepasgozaian, Wettstein, Zumpt and parts of the Daday collection. Mites were collected from all over the world, including the Swiss National Park.

There is no standard classification system for mites. Depending on the source, the family and/or genus may vary.

The type collection comprises four orders:

Mesostigmata:              37 Arten
Prostigmata:                  70 Arten
Sarcoptiformes:            69 Arten
Trombidiformes:        498 Arten

However, much of the material still requires detailed examination.
