Earth Sciences

How did the earth, and the living organisms that populate it, come to exist?
Earth sciences research focuses on the beginnings and the construction of our planet. We carry out research in the disciplines of anthropology, mineralogy and palaeontology. Our projects are always related in some way to the collections. One particularly important aspect of our research work is cooperation with national and international institutions.

The earth sciences collections at the Natural History Museum Basel have a long history. They have been established over the last 300 years and are constantly being expanded. We draw our knowledge from this enormous archive. It is only by looking at the past that we are able to understand the present, and perhaps even the future.
