Wildlife Photographer of the Year

The Natural History Museum Basel presents the special exhibition Wildlife Photographer of the Year, featuring the world’s 100 best wildlife photographs – exclusively in Switzerland.

The exhibition showcases powerful and fascinating images that capture remarkable animal behaviour, extraordinary species, and the breathtaking diversity of the natural world. The images use photography’s unique emotive power to engage and inspire audiences. The photographs tell many stories, prompting viewers to look more closely and encouraging them to stand up for the protection of nature.

Since 1965, the renowned competition Wildlife Photographer of the Year has recognised the world’s most outstanding nature photography. It is organised by the Natural History Museum, London. For this year’s edition, an esteemed jury selected the most powerful images from more than 60,000 entries submitted by over 4,000 photographers from more than 110 countries.

As an accompanying event, the museum is once again organising its own nature photography competition, Snapshot.

First discover the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition and then experience the RETHINK bar with music, atmosphere and everything a good evening needs.

AWARDS FOR THE BEST NATURE PICTURES

For the Snapshot competition an independent jury selected - out of all images submitted - ten images from each of the three categories and will award the podium places tonight. Photographs with a focus on biodiversity will be honoured by IWB. In addition, an audience favourite photograph was chosen through online voting. We will also reveal which photograph won the hearts of the public and therefore the Public Prize.

After the award ceremony we will open the SNAPSHOT exhibition. The 34 best photographs can be admired in the exhibition at our museum until 28 June 2026.

The Snapshot photo competition takes place as part of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year special exhibition.

The internationally recognised, award-winning nature photographer and environmental ambassador Prince Hussain Aga Khan is to be a guest at the museum.

With his organisation, Focused On Nature, Prince Hussain is committed to the protection of biodiversity, threatened and endangered species, and fragile habitats worldwide — through the lens of photography, awareness, and education initiatives, and by supporting nature conservation projects. At the centre of his talk are stories of first-hand encounters with marine life, the threats they face, and the changes Prince Hussain has witnessed above and below the surface.

Focused On Nature advocates for global marine conservation—particularly marine protected areas (MPAs) and the protection of whales, dolphins, mobulids, sharks, and sea turtles—while inspiring the public to join these efforts through exhibitions and illustrated talks that highlight the beauty and vulnerability of our blue planet.
