Xavier Mertz Lost in Antarctica. Photographs of an adventure.

The last undiscovered continent magically attracted explorers and adventurers at the beginning of the 20th century. The golden era of the Antarctic expeditions brought forth heroes whose reports people at home were eagerly awaiting. However, many of those who had moved out never returned. One of them was Xavier Mertz from Basel, who was the first Swiss to enter Antarctica in January 1912. He kept a diary, he photographed and documented his bitter fate. The exhibition showed magnificent images from his expedition into the eternal ice.

Parallel to the exhibition, 'Xavier Mertz, lost in Antarctica' by Jost Auf der Maur (Volume 1: The Diary) and Martin Riggenbach (Volume 2: The Images) was published by Echtzeit Verlag Basel.
