The collection at the Natural History Museum Basel includes type specimens for 28 mammal taxa. The specimens primarily date from the time around 1900.

The majority of the specimens come from research expeditions to Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), New Caledonia, and Central and West Africa. The species were primarily described in the second half of the 19th  and the first half of the 20th century.

The type catalogue focuses on rodents and bats.
