Millipedes Diplopoda

The type collection of millipedes stems mostly from expeditions and field trips undertaken by the Natural History Museum Basel. These mainly took place at the start of the 20th century.

The type collection contains a mixture of specimens from all over the world. Larger series come from New Caledonia, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), Switzerland and the Natural History Museum Basel's Bhutan expedition in 1972. Alongside various individual specimens, there are also smaller type series from Indonesia, Eastern Africa, Colombia and Turkey.

Carl Attems, Walter Bigler, Jean Carl, Jean-Marie Demange, Henrik Enghoff, Sergei I. Golovatch and Hans Lohmander were responsible for the original material and for the species’ descriptions.

The type collection includes a total of 348 entries of 162 taxa.
